How Can I Overcome My Self-Doubt?

What’s Preventing Me from Reaching My Goals?

What's Holding You Back? - THE GIRIER REPORT #8 - AxelGirier.com

Most people want freedom but sabotage their own progress without even realizing it.

True freedom starts with identifying and eliminating the limiting beliefs, excuses, and patterns holding you back.

Stop Ignoring What’s Holding You Back in Life

You can’t fix a problem you refuse to see.

Many live their lives stuck in a loop of self-sabotage, blaming circumstances, fearing judgment, or waiting for the “perfect time” to act.

Many chase freedom while carrying invisible chains that often feel like unchangeable facts.

You’ve told yourself the same story so often that it’s hard to separate truth from belief.

Maybe it sounds like this:

  • “I’m just not good enough.”
  • “Other people have opportunities I’ll never have.”
  • “I’ll start once I have more time, money, or confidence.”
  • “What if I fail? People will laugh at me.”

These thoughts feel real, but they’re often just excuses. They create a glass ceiling you can’t see but constantly bump against.

And until you recognize and take ownership of these patterns, you’ll stay stuck.

I know this because I’ve lived it.

What Held Me Back

Let me share a personal example. I grew up in a modest single-parent household in a small French overseas territory. From a young age, I learned the value of hard work. But for years, I believed people accomplishing extraordinary things were inherently better than me—smarter, more talented, and destined for success in a way I could never be.

That belief became my glass ceiling. Even as I worked my way up, gaining leadership opportunities, I doubted myself.

I thought:

“Why would anyone follow me?” and “Do I even deserve this?”

My self-sabotage disguised itself as humility.

It wasn’t until I started asking better questions that I broke free:

  • “Why not me?”
  • “What if I leaned into this role fully?”
  • “What’s the worst that could happen if I went for it?”

The real barrier wasn’t my upbringing, background, or lack of resources. It was me.

My limiting beliefs were holding me back, and they would not go away until I faced them head-on.

Even now, those beliefs sometimes try to creep back in, often disguised as imposter syndrome. But here’s the difference: I know what they look like. I can name them. I can confront them.

Awareness and ownership changed everything for me, and they can change everything for you, too.

How to Break Free

If you’re ready to stop ignoring what’s holding you back, here’s a simple process to get started:

1. Build Awareness

You can’t change what you don’t see.

Start by looking at your life honestly. Ask yourself tough questions:

  • What patterns keep showing up that limit me?
  • What excuses do I lean on when I don’t follow through?
  • What stories am I telling myself about why I can’t succeed?

This step is uncomfortable because it forces you to admit that the problem isn’t just external. It’s internal, too. But discomfort is part of the process.

The clearer you get about what’s holding you back, the easier it will be to address it.

2. Take Ownership

Awareness is a start, but it’s not enough.
You also need to take responsibility for your role in the problem.

This doesn’t mean blaming yourself for everything that’s gone wrong.

It means owning what’s in your control.

For example:

  • If you are afraid of judgment, admit that your fear, not other people’s opinions, is holding you back.
  • If you’re waiting for the “perfect time,” own that the perfect time will never come. The perfect time is when you decide it is.

Taking ownership doesn’t fix everything immediately, but it does give you back your power. You stop being a victim of circumstances and start being the architect of your future.

3. Take One Small, Bold Step

Freedom isn’t about massive overnight change.
It’s about consistent, courageous action.

Once you’ve identified what’s holding you back and taken ownership of it, ask yourself:

“What’s one small, bold step I can take today to challenge this pattern?”

Maybe it’s:

  • Saying yes to an opportunity you’ve been avoiding.
  • Sharing an idea you’ve been too afraid to put out there.
  • Setting a boundary you’ve been too scared to enforce.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, but must be a step forward.

Each time you take action, you weaken the hold your limiting beliefs have on you.

Your First Step to Freedom

Most people will never do this work. They’ll stay stuck in their comfort zones, blaming circumstances and waiting for something external to change. But that’s not freedom. That’s a prison disguised as safety.

If you want true freedom, face what’s holding you back.

1 - Build awareness.

2 - Take ownership.

3 - Take bold action.

4 - Repeat.

The good news is you don’t have to fix everything at once. Start small.

Take 10 minutes today to write down:

  • One belief or pattern that’s limiting you.
  • One action you can take to challenge it.

Then do it.

Don’t wait for the perfect time. The perfect time is when you decide it is.
